Beat stared at his reflection on the mirror, unsure to why he was even pushing through with such a thing or why he was even bothering with it to begin with. It wasn’t as if he was expecting anything to happen with him just standing there. His problem was why he was just doing that. Standing there staring at himself.

He supposed it was because he was never one to care about how he really looked like. As long as it was decent, that was more than fine for him. But the situation now was different. Beat may not have been sure what it was but he was more than certain that he didn’t want to be “just decent”.

Slowly, he pulled his beanie off his head and began tugging experimentally on his hair. More than half the time, his hair just fell on his face whenever he didn’t wear his favorite hat and whenever it didn’t, it would remain slicked back after staying in that position for so long. Casting a glance at the tube of gel on the counter, he considered actually trying to style it for today. How though?

It was probably better that he rid himself of the beanie, right? At least for now?

Taking the tube, he squeezed some of the gel out and into his palm. He ran his hands through his hair, trying to style it to his preference, tugging here and there, shaping it this way or that.

He looked at the mirror once more as soon as he finished. It looked all right to him but should he ask someone else’s opinion about it? Maybe Rhyme’s?

After a second, he let out a low chuckle and looked away from the mirror, a little red around the cheeks. Why was he hassling himself so much? He was just going to hang out with Ty Lee after all, and they always did that. What was so different about this time?

If only Rhyme saw him now.

“Hey, Beat?” Speak of the devil. Beat immediately hid the tube in the drawer, sure that it was in a place his sister wouldn’t find it, swiftly shut it close, and began smoothing his hair back down.

Within seconds, the small girl peeked into the room. “Do you know if--”

The boy didn’t even allow her to finish her sentence. “It’s not what ya think, Rhyme! I ain’t doin’ anythin’ funny!”

“I was jus’ uuuh--” Beat cursed himself. Why couldn’t he think of an excuse now? “Jus’ -- Jus’ lookin’ for my beanie! Tha’s all.” He mentally slapped himself in the forehead. Even he knew how lame that sounded, especially now that he had actually said it. It didn’t sound as bad when he played it in his head. Just to follow through with his lie, he grabbed said beanie and waved it in front of here. “Looks like it was jus’ ‘round here.”

Rhyme just stared at her brother, confused at what was going on. “Beat? You didn’t look like you were--”

Beat pulled out his cellphone, and his expression changed. He looked almost nervous. “Aww geez, Rhyme, ya think this could wait till later, yo? I got somethin’ I need to take care of.”

“But, Beat--”

“A’ight, I gotta bounce. Later!” And with that, Beat grabbed his skateboard and made his way out, slamming the door for good measure. At least he was somehow able to get out of that one. He let out a sigh as he made it down the stairs, promising that he would make it up to his sister when he got back. For now, he had to hurry if he didn’t want to keep Ty Lee waiting.

Back in the apartment, Rhyme couldn’t help but smile at the door. She really didn’t mean to pry but she had heard the close of the drawer, and the way Beat uncharacteristically kept running his hand through his hair was a dead giveaway. She opened the drawer to find the tube of gel. The girl let out a small giggle. To her, it looked like her older brother might just be maturing before her very eyes.
